| Elliot is looking for his forever home. |
He
Rescued Me
On
the morning of Wednesday, July 26th on the way to work, I saw a dog laying in the median of East Stassney Lane that had been hit by a vehicle
overnight and left to die. I normally cringe and look away, broken-hearted that yet another animal has died such an awful
death. As I passed I thought he was dead,
but for some reason looked in my rear view mirror and saw him raise his head and look right at me. My heart skipped a
beat. I had no choice but to turn my car around and help. Read more...

ELLIOT IS NOW IN HIS FOREVER HOME!
Maura and Shawn here in
Austin re the new parents -- took one look
at Elliot and fell in love with him. They called back a week later and said "Let's do this."
Please accept our thanks and appreciation for your kind and positive words,
for forwarding on Elliot's story, and especially for your generous donations.
Elliot is continuing to attend weekly acupuncture sessions at Love Pet Hospital
and the leg is slowly coming back, but the prognosis is guarded with regard to 100% usage of that right front leg . Please keep Elliot, Shawn and Maura in your thoughts.
I have a very unnerving gift in that I can literally feel the pain and suffering
of an animal in distress, and I am certain that is the reason I looked at Elliot and rescued him. But I think we all
have this gift in some form or another, or I would not have received such enormous response to Elliot's story. No doubt I
will be preaching to the choir here, but I can't stress enough how common Elliot's story is here in Austin, as well as around
the U.S. On a daily basis, irresponsible and callous people dump thousands of animals in our country, or treat them so abusively
that these inherently loyal spirits leave, or die. We've all seen them wandering the streets, locked up in shelters, or worse,
on news reports chained to trees in someone's back yard with no water, shade, or attention, quite possibly readying them for
a scheduled dog fight. And the outlook for cats is no better. Feral cats are on the rise in the U.S.,
which makes no sense when it's so easy to spay and neuter animals. What really makes me shake my head is knowing that daily
thousands and thousands of animals die in shelters because people purchase animals from puppy & kitten mills instead
of providing a home to a needy animal.
I implore and challenge each of you to continue to be guardians, Good Samaritans and advocates of all animals -- to be
an example and pass the word about these innocent animals, to paraphrase from a fellow animal advocate's website, "...whose lives are quite literally resting in your hands and heart." Volunteer
at your local shelters, donate food, money blankets, etc., go down to the kill-shelters and save one animal. Help shelters fund-raise, walk one
of their dog s , clean out kitty
litter boxes. Anything.
Currently in Austin there is a large group of citizens who are working to
ban dog chaining through a city ordinance. If passed, this would make Austin the 12th city in the U.S. to ban this cruel
and dangerous practice. If you are an Austinite, please help us pass this city ordinance by participating. You can get more
information by emailing: chainfreeaustin@ yahoo.com. If you are one of the many people who emailed us from around the U.S., please
check your local animal cruelty laws, if they exist, and find
out what you can do to help create & enhance
the laws for protection of these precious beings.
At the bottom of this text I have listed some links and information
to keep on hand in the event you should look in your rear view mirror one day, and hear a furry, or not so furry soul's
cry for help.
Thanks to you all for listening, and for your support,
Benae Colbert & Anna King-Colbert
